From Dog to Tamagotchi to ... the Dog as Tamagotchi ...

Weird. The Australian reported a while ago:
Dog lovers in Japan will soon be able to receive mobile phone text messages from their pets. New technology will allow a $50 mobile phone chip to receive a digital signal from a special dog collar and in the process translate barking into human speech. An icon on the owner's phone will also give a sense of the pet's mood. The service will be offered by British company Vodafone to consumers in Japan, where bark-translation has been a national obsession since late last year when the first machines hit the market with the trade name BowLingual
So, treating your dog as a Tamagotchi is in! But what happens if you forget to press the feed button ... *shudder*
