Where's My Earth-Shattering Ka-Boom?

Is the millenial angst Disney film Armageddon actually looking realistic?!? Yahoo News reports:
Scientists were warning of a possible asteroid collision with the Earth. An asteroid around 1.2 km wide could hit the earth on March 21, 2014 and has been classified as "an event meriting careful monitoring" by astronomers. But they say the probability of the asteroid hitting Earth is just 1 in 909,000 and the risk of impact is likely to decrease as they collect more information. The newly-discovered asteroid, known as 2003 QQ47, has a mass of around 2,600 million tonnes.
So, perhaps it won't hit. But maybe, just maybe, NASA might utilise this vague threat (since all politics in the US seems to be driven by threat levels these days) and try and get its funding back to a useful level (and a level which actually allows decent safety standards to be maintained!).
