The NYTimes has an article on Peter Molyneux, the designer behind the almost-released Fable (and of my very old fave, Populous) in which Molyneux describes the importance of character-identity emerging gradually through gameplay, not a tickbox selected before the game proper: "That's life - or at least life as molded by an Xbox controller."
